About the Director
Ms. Richards, a Kindergarten teacher at Daniel Bagley Elementary with over 20 years of experience, holds a Master's in Education and two Montessori certifications. Growing up on Orcas Island at a summer camp, she discovered her love for teaching as a certified sailing instructor, later teaching at Western Washington University, and leading the education department at the Center for Wooden Boats. Her passion for inclusive, creative education led her to become a Montessori and public school teacher in Seattle.
Twelve years ago, Ms. Richards started her camps to connect with alumni students and create a space for play, creativity, and nature exploration at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park. Inspired by her daughter’s teenage years, she developed a counselor leadership program for middle school and high school students, fostering responsibility and teamwork as they mentor younger campers. With a strong educational background, Ms. Richards creates a welcoming, inclusive environment where children and teens can grow, learn, and build lasting friendships.
CIT Program
Middle and High School students are encouraged to join the Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program and develop valuable leadership and interpersonal skills in a hands-on, supportive environment.
Now in its third year, this program equips participants with First Aid and CPR training while providing the opportunity to work directly with campers under the guidance of experienced staff, including Mrs. Syvertsen, Ms. Richards, and Mr. W.
CITs are assigned daily responsibilities and play an active role in creating a positive camp experience. Space is limited, and applicants are required to email Mrs. Syvertsen, sharing why they are interested in the program. At the end of the week, CITs will earn volunteer hours and receive a certificate of completion to commemorate their achievement.
